The introduction of ART medicines has dramatically changed the prognosis of HIV infected patients and contributed to ease the burden of disease of patients, the patients´ families and societies. Based on recently published clinical trial data, new WHO guidelines have repositioned the initiation of ART treatment to start the treatment as early as possible in spite of CD4 counts. How these guidelines will be viewed in a global perspective remains to be seen. The fact is, however, that approximately 60% of HIV infected people in developing countries are still not subject to ART treatment. Based on global HIV statistics and a significant number of newly infected HIV patients on an annual basis, it can be concluded that HIV is still a major health threat in a global perspective and that the need for new and more effective treatments as well as patient care programs is more urgent than ever.
